General:
Perennial from a taproot and branching stem-base; stems erect or ascending, many branched, white-hairy and glandular, 5-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves narrowly oblanceolate, white-hairy and glandular, 1.5-6 cm long, 2-8 mm wide, 1-nerved; stem leaves opposite, 2-4 pairs, reduced upwards; stipules lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of usually 3-6 flowers in a cluster, occasionally solitary; petals 5, white or pinkish, 2-cleft, stalklike at the bases; sepals 5, purplish-nerved, united, forming a tube 6-11 mm long; styles 5.
Fruits:
Capsules 8-11 mm long; seeds dark brown, 0.6-1.0 mm long, sometimes slightly winged, granular.

Habitat / Range

Dry open calcareous slopes from the montane to alpine zones; rare in NW BC; amphiberingian, N to AK, YT and NT and E to Greenland; E. Asia.
